Amyloid Light Chain
Amyloid Light Chain (ALC) refers to a type of protein that can misfold and accumulate in various tissues, leading to a condition known as amyloidosis. This misfolding occurs when the light chains of immunoglobulins, produced by plasma cells, aggregate abnormally.
When ALC deposits build up, they can disrupt normal organ function, particularly affecting the heart, kidneys, and nervous system. Diagnosis often involves blood tests, imaging, and biopsies to identify the presence of these amyloid deposits. Treatment typically focuses on managing symptoms and addressing the underlying plasma cell disorder.
