American Colonization Society
The American Colonization Society (ACS) was founded in 1816 with the goal of resettling free African Americans in Africa. The society believed that free blacks would face better opportunities and less discrimination if they were relocated. This led to the establishment of the colony of Liberia on the west coast of Africa, where many African Americans migrated.
While the ACS aimed to address issues of race and slavery, it was also criticized for promoting the idea that African Americans could not thrive in the United States. The society's efforts contributed to the complex history of race relations in America and the ongoing debate about the future of African Americans in the country.
