Althea Gibson
Althea Gibson was an American tennis player and professional golfer, born on August 25, 1927, in New York City. She became the first African American to compete at the U.S. National Championships in 1950 and later won several major titles, including Wimbledon in 1957 and 1958. Gibson's achievements broke racial barriers in sports and paved the way for future athletes.
In addition to her tennis career, Gibson also played professional golf, becoming the first African American woman to join the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour. She was a trailblazer who inspired many, and her legacy continues to influence sports and civil rights today.
