Alpha Agonists
Alpha agonists are a class of medications that primarily stimulate alpha-adrenergic receptors in the body. These receptors are part of the sympathetic nervous system, which helps regulate various physiological functions, including blood pressure and heart rate. By activating these receptors, alpha agonists can cause blood vessels to constrict, leading to increased blood pressure and reduced blood flow to certain areas.
Commonly used in treating conditions like hypertension and nasal congestion, alpha agonists can also be found in some eye drops to reduce intraocular pressure in glaucoma. Examples of alpha agonists include clonidine and phenylephrine. While effective, they may have side effects such as drowsiness or dry mouth.
