Allende's Government
Allende's Government refers to the presidency of Salvador Allende in Chile from 1970 until 1973. Allende was the first Marxist to be elected president in a country with a liberal democracy. His administration focused on implementing socialist reforms, including nationalizing key industries like copper and redistributing land to address economic inequality.
Allende's policies faced significant opposition from various sectors, including the United States, which feared the spread of communism in Latin America. Economic challenges, political unrest, and strikes led to a crisis that culminated in a military coup on September 11, 1973, resulting in Allende's death and the establishment of a military dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet.
