Alebrijes
Alebrijes are brightly colored Mexican folk art sculptures that depict fantastical creatures. They often combine features from various animals, such as the body of a lion with the wings of a butterfly. Originating in the 1930s, these unique creations are made from materials like wood or paper mache and are painted in vibrant patterns.
The term "alebrijes" was first coined by artist Pedro Linares, who created them as part of a dream where he saw a tree that transformed into different animals. Today, they are celebrated in Oaxaca, Mexico, where artisans continue to craft and innovate these imaginative figures.
