Agaricomycetes
Agaricomycetes is a class of fungi that includes many familiar mushrooms and toadstools. These organisms are characterized by their fruiting bodies, which are often umbrella-shaped and can be found in various habitats, including forests and grasslands. They play a crucial role in ecosystems as decomposers, breaking down organic matter and recycling nutrients back into the soil.
This class is diverse, encompassing over 20,000 species, including edible varieties like Agaricus bisporus (common button mushroom) and toxic ones like Amanita phalloides (death cap). Agaricomycetes also includes fungi that form symbiotic relationships with plants, enhancing nutrient uptake through their mycelium networks.
