Afonso III of Portugal
Afonso III of Portugal, born in 1210, was the King of Portugal from 1248 until his death in 1279. He is known for completing the conquest of the Algarve region from the Moors, which expanded the territory of Portugal significantly. His reign marked a period of consolidation and growth for the young kingdom, establishing a stronger central authority.
Afonso III was the son of Afonso II of Portugal and Urraca of León. He was also the first Portuguese king to adopt the title "King of the Algarve." His efforts in governance and military campaigns helped lay the foundation for future Portuguese expansion and stability.
