Adolescent Identity Statuses
Adolescent identity statuses refer to the different ways young people explore and commit to their personal identities during the teenage years. These statuses include identity diffusion, where individuals have not yet explored or committed to any identity; identity foreclosure, where they commit to an identity without exploration; identity moratorium, where they actively explore different identities but have not yet made a commitment; and identity achievement, where they have explored options and made a commitment to a specific identity.
These statuses are part of Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development, which emphasizes the importance of identity formation during adolescence. Understanding these statuses can help parents, educators, and mental health professionals support adolescents as they navigate their personal and social identities.
