Absalom Jones
Absalom Jones was an African American abolitionist and clergyman born in 1746 in Delaware. He is best known for founding the first African American Episcopal Church in the United States, known as the African Episcopal Church of St. Thomas, in 1794. Jones played a significant role in advocating for the rights of African Americans and worked tirelessly to improve their social conditions.
In addition to his religious contributions, Jones was a prominent figure in the abolitionist movement. He helped establish the Free African Society in 1787, which aimed to provide mutual aid and support for free Black individuals. His efforts laid the groundwork for future civil rights advancements in America.
