Abner Doubleday
Abner Doubleday was a United States Army officer and a Union general during the American Civil War. He is often mistakenly credited with inventing baseball in 1839, a claim that has been widely debunked. Doubleday played significant roles in several key battles, including the Battle of Gettysburg, where he commanded artillery units.
Born on June 26, 1819, in Ballston Spa, New York, Doubleday graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1842. After the Civil War, he served in various military posts and was involved in the development of military strategy. He passed away on January 26, 1893, in Auburn, New York.
