Abel Tasman
Abel Tasman was a Dutch explorer and navigator born in 1603. He is best known for being the first European to reach the islands of New Zealand and Tasmania in 1642. His voyages contributed significantly to the mapping of the southern Pacific region.
Tasman’s expeditions were commissioned by the Dutch East India Company, aiming to expand trade routes.
