ADA Amendments Act
The ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA) was enacted in 2008 to broaden the definition of disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This law aimed to ensure that more individuals qualify for protections against discrimination in the workplace and other areas. It emphasizes that the definition of disability should be interpreted in favor of individuals, making it easier for them to demonstrate their eligibility for accommodations.
The ADAAA also clarified that mitigating measures, such as medication or assistive devices, should not be considered when determining if someone has a disability. This means that even if a person's condition is managed effectively, they can still be protected under the ADA if their condition substantially limits a major life activity.
