54th Massachusetts Infantry
The 54th Massachusetts Infantry was one of the first African American regiments in the United States during the Civil War. Formed in 1863, it played a crucial role in challenging the prevailing racial stereotypes of the time. The regiment is best known for its courageous assault on Fort Wagner in South Carolina, which highlighted the bravery and determination of Black soldiers.
Led by Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the 54th fought valiantly despite facing discrimination and unequal pay. Their service helped pave the way for the acceptance of African Americans in the military, contributing to the eventual integration of the U.S. armed forces.
