40S subunit
The 40S subunit is a component of the ribosome, which is essential for protein synthesis in cells. It is the smaller of the two ribosomal subunits in eukaryotes, the other being the 60S subunit. The 40S subunit is responsible for binding to messenger RNA (mRNA) and initiating the translation process, where genetic information is converted into proteins.
During translation, the 40S subunit scans the mRNA for the start codon, which signals the beginning of protein synthesis. Once it identifies the start codon, the 60S subunit joins to form a complete ribosome, allowing the assembly of amino acids into a polypeptide chain.
