2011 earthquake
The 2011 earthquake in Japan, also known as the Great East Japan Earthquake, struck on March 11, measuring 9.0 on the moment magnitude scale. It was one of the most powerful earthquakes ever recorded, causing widespread devastation along the northeastern coast of Honshu, Japan's main island. The quake triggered a massive tsunami, leading to significant loss of life and damage to infrastructure.
The disaster also resulted in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, where the tsunami disabled power supply and cooling systems, leading to nuclear meltdowns. Over 18,000 people were confirmed dead or missing, and millions were affected by the destruction of homes and communities.
