1988 Spitak Earthquake
The 1988 Spitak Earthquake struck northern Armenia on December 7, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was near the town of Spitak, causing widespread destruction in nearby cities, including Leninakan and Kirovakan. The earthquake resulted in significant loss of life and property, with thousands of buildings collapsing.
Approximately 25,000 people lost their lives, and many more were injured. The disaster left around 500,000 people homeless, prompting a massive international relief effort. The earthquake highlighted the need for improved building codes and disaster preparedness in the region, leading to changes in construction practices in Armenia.
