1953 Iranian Coup
The 1953 Iranian Coup was a pivotal event in Iran's history, where the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh was overthrown. This coup was orchestrated by the United States and United Kingdom due to concerns over Mossadegh's nationalization of the oil industry, which threatened Western oil interests.
Following the coup, the Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, was reinstated with increased power. The coup led to years of authoritarian rule, significant political repression, and ultimately contributed to the 1979 Iranian Revolution, which transformed Iran into an Islamic Republic.
