餅つき
餅つき is a traditional Japanese rice cake-making ceremony. It involves steaming glutinous rice, which is then pounded with large wooden mallets in a mortar. This process transforms the rice into a sticky, smooth dough called 餅 (mochi), which is often shaped into various forms and enjoyed during celebrations.
The event is typically held during the New Year or other festive occasions. Participants, including families and friends, take turns pounding the rice while chanting rhythmic phrases. The resulting 餅 can be eaten plain or used in various dishes, symbolizing good fortune and prosperity in Japanese culture.
