Βασιλόπιτας (Cake)
Βασιλόπιτα is a traditional Greek cake served on New Year's Day to celebrate Saint Basil's Day. It is typically made with a sweet, fluffy batter that may include ingredients like nuts, spices, and sometimes chocolate. A coin, known as the Vasilopita coin, is hidden inside the cake, symbolizing good luck for the year ahead.
The cake is usually decorated with a cross and often served at family gatherings or community events. When the cake is cut, the first piece is traditionally offered to Saint Basil for blessings, followed by pieces for family members and guests, ensuring everyone shares in the good fortune.
