The British East India Company was a trading company established in 1600 to conduct trade in the East Indies, primarily in India and Southeast Asia. It played a significant role in the expansion of British trade and influence in the region, initially focusing on spices, silk, and tea.
Over time, the company gained political power and effectively governed large parts of India until the mid-19th century. Its actions contributed to significant changes in Indian society and economy, leading to the eventual establishment of direct British rule after the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
