zonules of Zinn
The zonules of Zinn, also known as the zonular fibers, are tiny, thread-like structures in the eye that connect the ciliary body to the lens. They play a crucial role in holding the lens in place and allowing it to change shape during the process of accommodation, which helps the eye focus on objects at different distances.
These fibers are made of elastic connective tissue and are essential for maintaining the proper position of the lens. When the ciliary muscles contract, the zonules relax, enabling the lens to become thicker for near vision. Conversely, when the ciliary muscles relax, the zonules become taut, flattening the lens for distance vision.
