woolly bears
Woolly bears are the larval stage of the giant leopard moth, known scientifically as Pyrrharctia isabella. These caterpillars are easily recognized by their fuzzy, black and orange-brown bristles. They typically measure about 1 to 2 inches long and are commonly found in gardens and fields during the fall.
Woolly bears are famous for their ability to survive cold temperatures. They can endure freezing conditions by entering a state of dormancy, allowing them to survive until spring. In spring, they pupate and eventually emerge as adult moths, completing their life cycle.
