womanism
Womanism is a social theory that centers on the experiences and struggles of Black women and other women of color. It emphasizes the importance of race, gender, and class in understanding the unique challenges they face. Womanism seeks to address issues such as sexism, racism, and economic inequality, advocating for a more inclusive feminist movement.
The term was coined by author and activist Ain’t I a Woman? in her 1982 book, which highlighted the need for a perspective that includes the voices and experiences of women of color. Womanism promotes community, spirituality, and a connection to culture, aiming for social justice and equality for all marginalized groups.
