Ulipristal acetate is a medication primarily used as an emergency contraceptive. It works by delaying or inhibiting ovulation, which can prevent pregnancy if taken within a few days after unprotected intercourse. This medication is available in pill form and is most effective when taken as soon as possible after the event. In addition to its use in emergency contraception, ulipristal acetate is also prescribed for the treatment of uterine fibroids in women. It helps to reduce the size of these noncancerous growths and alleviate associated symptoms, such as heavy menstrual bleeding.
