trust vs. mistrust
The concept of "trust vs. mistrust" is the first stage in Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development. It occurs during infancy, typically from birth to about 18 months. In this stage, infants learn to trust their caregivers to meet their basic needs, such as food, comfort, and safety. When caregivers are responsive and consistent, infants develop a sense of trust in the world around them.
Conversely, if caregivers are neglectful or inconsistent, infants may develop mistrust. This can lead to feelings of insecurity and anxiety. Successfully navigating this stage lays the foundation for healthy relationships and emotional stability in later life, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with others.
