A "surah" is a chapter of the Quran, the holy book of Islam. The Quran consists of 114 surahs, each varying in length and covering different themes, such as guidance, morality, and law. Surahs are written in Arabic and are recited during prayers and other religious practices.
Each surah is divided into verses called ayahs. The first surah, Al-Fatiha, is often recited in daily prayers and serves as an introduction to the Quran. Surahs can be classified as either Meccan or Medinan, depending on whether they were revealed before or after the migration of the Prophet Muhammad to Medina.
