stylopharyngeus
The stylopharyngeus is a muscle located in the throat, specifically in the pharynx. It originates from the styloid process of the temporal bone and extends down to the pharyngeal wall. This muscle plays a crucial role in swallowing by helping to elevate the pharynx and larynx.
Innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve (cranial nerve IX), the stylopharyngeus assists in the movement of food from the mouth to the esophagus. Its contraction helps widen the pharynx, facilitating the passage of food and air during swallowing and breathing.
