Structure/function claims are statements that describe the role of a nutrient or dietary ingredient in maintaining normal body structure or function. For example, a product may claim that calcium helps build strong bones. These claims do not require pre-approval from the FDA but must be truthful and not misleading.
Manufacturers must provide a disclaimer stating that the claim has not been evaluated by the FDA and that the product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. This ensures consumers understand the difference between structure/function claims and disease claims, which are more regulated.
