spinocerebellar ataxia
Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA) is a group of inherited disorders that affect coordination and balance. It occurs due to degeneration of specific areas in the cerebellum and spinal cord, leading to problems with movement, speech, and sometimes vision. Symptoms typically begin in adulthood and can vary widely among individuals.
There are several types of SCA, each caused by different genetic mutations. Diagnosis often involves genetic testing, neurological examinations, and imaging studies. While there is currently no cure, management focuses on improving quality of life through physical therapy, occupational therapy, and supportive care.
