Proxemics is the study of how people use space in communication. It examines the physical distance between individuals during interactions and how this distance can convey messages about relationships, intimacy, and social norms. Different cultures have varying norms regarding personal space, which can affect communication and understanding.
The concept was introduced by Edward T. Hall, an anthropologist, in the 1960s. He identified four main zones of personal space: intimate, personal, social, and public. Each zone serves a different purpose and reflects the nature of the relationship between the individuals involved, influencing how they perceive and respond to one another.
