prosopagnosia
Prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, is a cognitive disorder characterized by the inability to recognize faces. Individuals with this condition may struggle to identify familiar people, even close friends or family members, relying on other cues like voice or clothing. This can lead to social challenges and feelings of isolation.
The condition can be present from birth, known as developmental prosopagnosia, or can occur after brain injury, referred to as acquired prosopagnosia. It is linked to specific areas of the brain, particularly the fusiform gyrus, which plays a crucial role in facial recognition.
