procedural memory
Procedural memory is a type of long-term memory that helps us perform tasks without consciously thinking about them. It involves the learning of skills and actions, such as riding a bicycle or playing a musical instrument. This memory allows us to execute these tasks automatically after practice.
Unlike declarative memory, which involves facts and events that we can consciously recall, procedural memory is often acquired through repetition and practice. It is stored in different brain areas, primarily the basal ganglia and cerebellum, making it essential for activities that require coordination and timing.
