Homonym: pawn (Piece)
A "pawn" is a piece in the game of chess, typically the most numerous on the board. Each player starts with eight pawns, which are positioned in front of the other pieces. Pawns move forward one square at a time but capture diagonally. They can promote to a more powerful piece, usually a queen, when they reach the opponent's back rank.
In a different context, "pawn" can refer to a person or item placed in a pawn shop as collateral for a loan. If the loan is not repaid, the pawn shop can sell the item to recover its money. This practice allows individuals to access quick cash while temporarily giving up ownership of their belongings.
