pā
A "pā" is a traditional Māori fortified village or settlement in New Zealand. These structures were built by the Māori people for protection against enemies and often featured defensive walls, ditches, and lookout points. Pā were strategically located on elevated ground or near resources like water and food.
Inside a pā, there were communal living spaces, storage areas, and places for cooking and gathering. The design of a pā reflected the social structure and cultural practices of the Māori, emphasizing community and cooperation. Today, many pā sites are of historical significance and are studied for their archaeological value.
