ossicular chain
The ossicular chain is a series of three tiny bones located in the middle ear, known as the malleus, incus, and stapes. These bones play a crucial role in hearing by transmitting sound vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear. The malleus connects to the eardrum, while the stapes connects to the oval window of the cochlea, amplifying sound waves as they pass through.
Each bone in the ossicular chain is connected by small joints, allowing them to move freely. This movement is essential for converting sound waves into mechanical energy, which is then transformed into electrical signals by the cochlea for the brain to interpret as sound.
