mitral valve prolapse
Mitral valve prolapse is a condition where one of the heart's valves, the mitral valve, does not close properly. This valve is located between the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart. When the valve flaps, or leaflets, bulge into the left atrium during the heart's contraction, it can lead to a backflow of blood, known as regurgitation.
Most people with mitral valve prolapse experience no symptoms and lead normal lives. In some cases, it can cause palpitations or chest pain. Diagnosis is typically made through an echocardiogram, which uses sound waves to create images of the heart's structure and function.
