minimally conscious state
A minimally conscious state (MCS) is a condition of severely altered consciousness where a person shows inconsistent but definite signs of awareness. Individuals in MCS may respond to simple commands, exhibit emotional responses, or demonstrate purposeful behavior, although these actions are not consistent.
MCS can occur after a brain injury, such as those caused by trauma or stroke. It is different from a vegetative state, where a person has no awareness or purposeful responses. Diagnosis and treatment often involve a team of healthcare professionals, including neurologists and rehabilitation specialists, to assess and support recovery.
