least tern
The least tern is a small seabird belonging to the family Laridae. It typically measures about 8 to 9 inches in length and has a wingspan of around 20 inches. These birds are characterized by their slender bodies, pointed wings, and a distinctive black cap on their heads during the breeding season. They are often found along coastal areas, rivers, and lakes.
Least terns primarily feed on small fish and invertebrates, which they catch by diving into the water. They are known for their unique nesting behavior, often creating shallow depressions in sandy or gravelly areas. Due to habitat loss and disturbances, the least tern is considered a threatened species in some regions.
