Kadomatsu is a traditional Japanese decoration made from pine, bamboo, and sometimes plum branches. It is placed at the entrance of homes and businesses during the New Year season to welcome ancestral spirits and bring good fortune for the coming year. The arrangement typically features two bamboo shoots of varying heights, symbolizing strength and resilience, along with pine branches that represent longevity.
The origins of kadomatsu date back to ancient Japan, where it was believed that these decorations would invite the Toshigami, the deity of the New Year. Traditionally, kadomatsu is displayed from December 13 until January 7, after which it is often burned in a ceremony to send off the spirits.
