jigger flea
The jigger flea, also known as the chigoe flea or Tunga penetrans, is a small parasitic insect found primarily in tropical regions of Africa and South America. It is about the size of a pinhead and can burrow into the skin of humans and animals, often entering through the toes. Once inside, the female flea enlarges and lays eggs, causing irritation and potential infections.
Infected individuals may experience intense itching, pain, and swelling. If left untreated, jigger flea infestations can lead to serious complications, including secondary infections and even loss of digits. Prevention includes wearing shoes and maintaining good hygiene to avoid contact with the fleas in contaminated environments.
