interphalangeal
The term "interphalangeal" refers to the joints located between the phalanges, which are the bones in the fingers and toes. These joints allow for bending and straightening movements, enabling the flexibility and dexterity of the hands and feet. There are two types of interphalangeal joints in the fingers: the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints and the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints.
In the toes, there are also interphalangeal joints, but they are generally simpler in structure. Each toe has a proximal and a distal interphalangeal joint, except for the big toe, which has only one interphalangeal joint. Proper functioning of the interphalangeal joints is essential for activities such as grasping objects and walking.
