intaglio
Intaglio is a printmaking technique where images are incised into a surface, typically a metal plate. The incised areas hold ink, while the raised surfaces remain ink-free. This method allows for fine details and rich textures, making it popular among artists and printmakers.
To create an intaglio print, the artist first engraves or etches the design onto the plate. After applying ink and wiping the surface, the plate is pressed onto paper using a printing press. The pressure transfers the ink from the incised lines to the paper, resulting in a detailed image.
