inducible NOS (iNOS)
Inducible NOS (iNOS) is an enzyme responsible for producing nitric oxide (NO) in response to inflammatory signals. Unlike other forms of nitric oxide synthase, iNOS is not constantly present in cells but is produced when the body detects pathogens or injury. This process helps the immune system fight infections and regulate inflammation.
iNOS is primarily found in immune cells, such as macrophages and neutrophils. The nitric oxide generated by iNOS plays a crucial role in various physiological processes, including vasodilation and neurotransmission. However, excessive iNOS activity can lead to tissue damage and contribute to inflammatory diseases.
