Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a condition characterized by increased pressure within the skull without an obvious cause. This condition often leads to symptoms such as headaches, vision problems, and ringing in the ears. It primarily affects overweight women of childbearing age, but it can occur in anyone.
The exact cause of IIH is unknown, but it is believed to be related to an imbalance in the production and absorption of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Diagnosis typically involves imaging studies and a lumbar puncture to measure CSF pressure. Treatment may include weight loss, medications, or, in severe cases, surgery.
