ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs)
A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is a safety device designed to protect people from electric shock. It works by monitoring the flow of electricity in a circuit and quickly shutting off the power if it detects an imbalance, which can occur when electricity escapes to the ground. GFCIs are commonly installed in areas where water and electricity may come into contact, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor outlets.
GFCIs can be found in two main forms: GFCI outlets and GFCI circuit breakers. GFCI outlets look like standard electrical outlets but have a "Test" and "Reset" button. GFCI circuit breakers are installed in the electrical panel and protect an entire circuit. Regular testing of GFCIs is recommended to ensure they are functioning properly.
