elm bark beetles
The elm bark beetle is a small insect that primarily targets elm trees. These beetles are known for their role in spreading Dutch elm disease, a serious fungal infection that can kill elm trees. They create tunnels under the bark, disrupting the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients.
There are several species of elm bark beetles, with the most common being the European elm bark beetle and the native elm bark beetle. These insects are typically brown or black and measure about 1/8 inch in length. Effective management includes monitoring tree health and removing infected trees to prevent the spread of disease.
