Droplet precautions are infection control measures used to prevent the spread of diseases that can be transmitted through respiratory droplets. These droplets are produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. To minimize the risk of transmission, healthcare workers and visitors should wear a mask when in close proximity to the infected individual.
In addition to wearing masks, droplet precautions also involve maintaining a safe distance from the infected person, typically at least six feet. Patients may be placed in private rooms, and visitors are often limited to reduce exposure. Common illnesses requiring droplet precautions include influenza and COVID-19.
