condyloid joints
Condyloid joints, also known as ellipsoidal joints, are a type of synovial joint that allows movement in two planes: flexion and extension, as well as abduction and adduction. These joints consist of an oval-shaped end of one bone fitting into a similarly shaped cavity of another bone, enabling a range of motion while maintaining stability.
A common example of a condyloid joint is the wrist joint, where the radius meets the carpal bones. This joint structure allows for the wrist to move up and down and side to side, facilitating various hand movements essential for daily activities.
