bow drill
A bow drill is a simple tool used for starting fires through friction. It consists of a flexible rod, called a bow, which is attached to a string. The string is wrapped around a spindle, a straight stick that is rotated against a fireboard to create heat and eventually ignite tinder.
This method is one of the oldest fire-starting techniques and is often used in survival situations. The fireboard is typically made from softwood, while the spindle can be made from harder wood. Mastering the bow drill requires practice and skill to generate enough friction for a spark.
